Description:
With a wide range of cream/straw/honey brown tones and filled with darker character knots, Australian Cypress is the ideal flooring choice wherever a warm, rustic country look is desired. Growing slowly in a semi-arid area in Australia, provides this specie with a unique property as the only commercial softwood harder than red oak. It is the superior "softwood" for both residential and commercial use.
Color Range & Color Change:
Color Range: Australian Cypress has an extreme range of color variability.
Color Change: Australian Cypress will exhibit a modest amount of color change over time with a slight muting of the color range and some ambering.
Hardness:
Australian Cypress is 110% as hard as red oak (1375 on the Janka scale vs. 1260 for red oak )
Where to Use:
Australian Cypress may be used both residentially as well as commercially, where it is very popular in restaurants, ski lodges, retail stores.
Stability:
Australian Cypress is a very stable wood.
Allergic Reaction Potential:
Australian Cypress contains aromatic resins, which give Australian Cypress its pleasant softwood scent. This scent, which quickly abates over time, is particularly strong in freshly cut/sanded flooring. There have been reports of adverse respiratory reactions to Australian Cypress for those cutting / sanding this species.
Known Finish Issues:
Certain oil finishes may not dry or adhere properly on top of the knots found in this wood.
ALWAYS test the finish you propose to use FIRST on test pieces to insure compatibility.
